About the Book: Each story in The Mexican Messiah takes place in a different country and has in common the expatriate experience. Here you will find characters lost, both spiritually and geographically, and in search of a sense of home. The title story, "The Mexican Messiah," is a unique reading experience. Part literary thriller, part travel narrative, and part metaphysical quest story, it follows the journeys of two characters drawn, for very different reasons, to an alleged holy man in Mexico. 





About the Author: Jay Kauffmann is a former international model, travel writer, and award-winning poet. He attended Brandeis and U.C./Berkeley and holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. He has taught at Randolph College, WriterHouse, and the University of Virginia, and is currently English Chair at the Miller School of Albemarle. Author of The Mexican Messiah: A Novella and Stories (Cornerstone Press), he was runner-up for the Leapfrog Global Fiction Prize and nominated for a Pushcart Prize and Best New American Voices. His work has appeared in CutBankHunger Mountain ReviewPrime NumberThe Writer’s ChronicleupstreetMid-American Review, and other journals and anthologies.

 

About the Moderator: Clifford Garstang is the author of the novels The Last Bird of ParadiseOliver’s Travels, and The Shaman of Turtle Valley, as well as the short story collections House of the Ancients and Other StoriesIn an Uncharted Country, and What the Zhang Boys Know, winner of the Library of Virginia Literary Award for Fiction. A former international lawyer, he is also the editor of the anthology series Everywhere Stories: Short Fiction from a Small Planet and the cofounder and former editor of Prime Number Magazine. He lives in Staunton, Virginia.
